Gaming Setup for WoW Forever

You don't need any of this to play WoW Forever. The game runs fine with a basic mouse and keyboard, and players have been reaching level 60 that way for twenty years. If you do want to upgrade, these are the things that make the biggest difference in an MMO, in the order we'd buy them.

1. An MMO mouse with side buttons

Why: In WoW you use far more abilities than you have fingers near WASD. A mouse with extra side buttons puts your most-used spells, potions and macros under your thumb. That's especially useful for healers and for classes with many short cooldowns.

What to look for: enough side buttons that you can tell apart by feel, a shape that fits your hand, and software to bind keys (or simply bind them in the game).

Examples: Logitech G600 (many side buttons, made for MMOs) · Razer Naga (some models with swappable side plates)

Tip: Pair it with our macro guide: one button can do several things at once.

2. A headset with a microphone

Why: Dungeons and later raids go much smoother when your group can talk. A headset keeps the game sound out of your microphone, and a comfortable one makes a long evening easier.

What to look for: comfortable on the ears for hours, a microphone you can mute quickly, and a cable or wireless, depending on how you play.

Tip: Getting ready for your first raids? Read our raid preparation.

3. A keyboard you like typing on

Why: You'll press the same keys thousands of times, and you'll chat a lot. Any keyboard works. A good one is mainly about comfort and keys that don't stick.

What to look for: a layout you're used to, a comfortable key feel, and optionally extra keys for macros.

4. A chair for long sessions

Why: Leveling evenings and raid nights get long. Your back will notice before your character does.

What to look for: adjustable height and back support, armrests at desk height, and a seat that suits your size. Try one in a shop if you can.

5. A second monitor

Why: Guides, maps and your profession shopping list sit next to the game instead of in front of it. You don't need to alt-tab mid-quest.

What to look for: any screen you have lying around works. If you're buying one, the same height as your main screen is easier on your neck.

What we don't recommend

FAQ

Do I need an MMO mouse to play well?

No. It's comfortable, not required. Many good players bind their abilities to the keyboard.

Do I need a headset for dungeons?

No. Text chat works. Voice just makes groups faster and more relaxed.
