WoW Forever FPS Drops, Lag and Crashes

If WoW Forever stutters, freezes or crashes, the same steps usually help. Here are the ones Blizzard recommends in its support articles, in order, to try one after another. To check whether the servers are having problems right now, see Server status.

Low FPS and FPS Drops

  1. If your PC only just meets the minimum requirements, the game runs worse, according to Blizzard: System requirements.
  2. Close other programs, including your browser.
  3. Update your graphics driver, especially after major patches.
  4. Try turning off vertical sync in the game (Main Menu > System > Graphics > Vertical Sync).
  5. As a last step, reset your graphics settings to default (Main Menu > System > Graphics > Defaults > These Settings).
  6. Make sure your PC isn't overheating. According to Blizzard, overheating can cause FPS drops and crashes.

Lag Spikes and Disconnects

Blizzard doesn't have a separate support article for lag spikes. If it's your FPS, the steps above help. Whether Blizzard is currently reporting server problems is shown on Server status. If you get disconnected, Blizzard's steps are under Disconnected from the server on our login errors page.

Crashing on Startup or Freezing

If WoW Forever crashes or freezes on startup, on a loading screen or in game, Blizzard recommends these steps:

  1. Let the installation in the Battle.net app finish completely.
  2. Update your graphics driver and operating system.
  3. Close other programs and overlays.
  4. Run the repair tool for WoW in the Battle.net app: click the gear next to Play, select Check for Updates, then Scan and Repair and Begin Scan.
  5. Test with a new administrator account in Windows.
  6. On a laptop: check your power and graphics settings.
  7. If nothing else helps, reinstall the game.

For graphics problems, Blizzard also suggests resetting your driver settings: on AMD cards via AMD Radeon Settings > Preferences > Restore Factory Defaults, on NVIDIA and Intel in their control panels. (Blizzard support article)

Crashes on Mac

On a Mac, Blizzard lists the same steps: let the installation finish, update macOS, close other programs and overlays, run the repair tool in the Battle.net app and try a new administrator account.

Addons and Interface

Try disabling your addons (Main Menu > Addons > Disable All). If that helps, one of them is the cause. If it doesn't, reset your interface: you rename the Cache, Interface and WTF folders in your WoW Forever game folder instead of deleting them. Where the folder is and how it works: Installing addons.

Error #109

"ERROR #109 … A thread has become unresponsive" is a crash, not a login error. Blizzard doesn't have a separate article for it. The steps under "Crashing on Startup or Freezing" apply.
