What Classic Hardcore was like
Classic These rules applied on the Classic Hardcore servers from 2023 onward. They're not confirmed for WoW Forever, but they give an idea of what to expect.
- One life per character. Resurrection via spells, soulstones or the spirit healer was disabled.
- Mak'gora: a duel to the death where the loser dies for good.
- Accidental PvP protection: the game warned you before you flagged yourself for PvP.
- Deaths caused by disconnects or lag were generally not reversed.
- Dead characters could later transfer to normal Classic servers.
- An optional self-found mode was added later: no Auction House, no trading and no mail with other players.
Which class for Hardcore?
- Self-healing saves lives: Paladin, Druid, Priest and Shaman can heal themselves in an emergency.
- Pets take damage for you: Hunter and Warlock let their pet or demon tank.
- Escapes matter more than damage: Rogue, Mage and Hunter have tools to get out of a losing fight.
- Warrior: strong, but needs good gear and support. A tough pick for your first Hardcore run.

Where it gets dangerous
- Dungeons with tightly packed mobs and patrols: one wrong move pulls several packs.
- Long dungeons you can't get out of quickly. Plan ahead where your group can stand safely.
- Open-world elites, especially in camps and caves. Only do elite quests in a group.
- Runners that bring back adds, and mobs several levels above you.
- Falls and deep water: fall damage and fatigue can kill you without a single mob around.
- WoW Forever's new dungeons and zones: nobody has Hardcore experience there yet. Play carefully, especially at launch.
- Find bosses, mobs and levels for every instance in the dungeon atlas, and zones by level in the Leveling guide.

FAQ
When is Hardcore coming to WoW Forever?
Some time after launch: Hardcore won't be available on Nov 4 (Nov 5, 2026 in Europe). There's no official date, but reports say the BlizzCon roadmap slide shows winter 2026/27.
What happens when my Hardcore character dies?
It's out of Hardcore. However, Blizzard lets you move the dead character to another ruleset, including PvP, and keep playing there.
Can I transfer a normal character to Hardcore?
No. You can't switch rulesets, so you'll need a new character for Hardcore.
Is there self-found in WoW Forever?
Not confirmed. Blizzard hasn't commented on a self-found mode yet.
Are there duels to the death (Mak'gora)?
Not officially. Classic Hardcore had Mak'gora, but it hasn't been announced for WoW Forever.
Does my Legacy progress count on Hardcore?
No. Progress only flows out of Hardcore: what you earn there counts on all rulesets, but not the other way round. Hardcore gets 12 Legacy challenges of its own.
Can I play on Hardcore with friends from other rulesets?
No. On Hardcore you can only group, run dungeons and raid with other Hardcore players, and battlegrounds stay separate too.
As of Oct 14, 2026. We only mark something as confirmed if it appears in a Blizzard article. As soon as Blizzard reveals more about Hardcore, we'll add it here.
