Rogue PvP in WoW Forever: guide for duels and battlegrounds
How to play a Rogue in PvP: role, every important ability with the level you learn it, openers and control chains, talents, poisons, gear and tips against every class. Abilities, talents and gear come from the game data, the gameplay tips from experience with WoW Classic.
- Kidney Shot: level 30+
- Blind: level 34+
- Control: 4
- Duels: Level 30
In short
- Rogues win fights with the opener: from stealth they choose the target and the moment.
- Their strength is control: Cheap Shot, Kidney Shot, Gouge and Blind lock an enemy down for a long time.
- Subtlety is the PvP specialization: Preparation gives you your most important cooldowns a second time.
- Without an opener, things get hard. Vanish and Sprint get you out so you can try again.
Role in PvP
- In duels: control, pack damage into stuns, interrupt heals. Fights rarely last long.
- On battlegrounds: take out healers and casters, intercept flag carriers, surprise bases from stealth.
- In a group: take targets out with Sap before the fight and interrupt spells with Kick.
- Your weakness: without an opener and against several enemies at once you can't take much. Pick your fights.
Core abilities by level
| Ability | Level | Use | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stealth | 1 | Basics | The basis of every opener. You move slower until you attack. |
| Gouge | 6 | Control | Incapacitates a target facing you for 4 sec. Damage breaks the effect. |
| Evasion | 8 | Defense | 50% more dodge for 15 sec. Strong against melee. |
| Sprint | 10 | Escape | 50% more movement speed for 15 sec, even in stealth. |
| Sap | 10 | Control | Takes a humanoid out of the fight before combat for up to 25, 35 or 45 sec depending on rank. You stay in stealth. |
| Kick | 12 | Interrupt | Interrupts a spell and locks out that school of spells for 5 sec. |
| Garrote | 14 | Opener | Damage over 18 sec from stealth, from behind. Awards 1 combo point. |
| Ambush | 18 | Opener | A big hit from stealth, from behind and with a dagger. |
| Vanish | 22 | Escape | Puts you back into stealth in the middle of a fight and breaks movement impairing effects. |
| Cheap Shot | 26 | Opener | Stuns for 4 sec from stealth and awards 2 combo points. |
| Kidney Shot | 30 | Control | Finishing move: stuns for 1 to 5 sec depending on combo points, 2 to 6 sec from rank 2 (level 50). |
| Blind | 34 | Control | Makes the target wander disoriented for up to 10 sec. Damage breaks the effect. |
Level: the character level at which the Rogue trainer teaches you the ability. Levels and values come from the beta game data (client version 1.60.1); higher ranks increase duration and damage.
Openers and control chains
These sequences are proven patterns from WoW Classic. Adapt them to your enemy, energy and cooldowns. unconfirmed
Standard opener
- Cheap Shot
- 1–2 builders (Backstab or Hemorrhage)
- Kidney Shot
- Damage while the target is stunned
- Gouge
- Get behind the target, keep building
Lots of combo points at once
- Premeditation
- Cheap Shot with Initiative
- Kidney Shot with 4–5 combo points
Against casters
- Garrote (from the front too with Dirty Deeds)
- Kick the first big spell
- Gouge
- Blind when a heal is coming
Reset and restart
- Blind
- Gain distance, pool energy
- Vanish
- Open again with Cheap Shot
- In WoW Classic, repeated stuns get shorter and shorter. So alternate between stuns, incapacitates and Blind.
- Gouge and Blind break on damage. Don't attack a target controlled that way, not even with poisons or bleeds.
- According to its tooltip, Redirect only transfers combo points to non-player targets. It won't help you in PvP.
Duels at level 30
The beta ends at level 30, and the duel tournament on October 17 and 18, 2026 is played at level 30 as well. According to the game data you then have 11 of the 12 core abilities on this page and 21 talent points.
- Not available yet: Blind (Level 34).
- You have only just learned Kidney Shot; at rank 1 it stuns for 1 to 5 sec.
- With 21 points in one tree you reach its row 5. In Subtlety that means Dirty Deeds, Preparation, Hemorrhage.
- Gear for this level: PvP list with dagger and PvP list with Hemorrhage.
Talents for PvP
Our Subtlety build has a PvP variant: Subtlety with points in Combat. You can load and adjust it in the Talent calculator.
Subtlety and Combat
- Initiative · Ambush, Garrote and Cheap Shot award an extra combo point.
- Premeditation · Gives you 2 combo points instantly, which you must use within 20 sec.
- Dirty Deeds · Cheap Shot and Garrote cost 20 less energy, and Garrote also works from the front.
- Preparation · Resets the cooldowns of your other Rogue abilities, giving you Vanish, Sprint and Evasion a second time.
- Hemorrhage · A builder with any weapon, stronger with a dagger. Increases the damage of Rupture.
- Elusiveness · Vanish and Blind are ready again 90 sec sooner.
- Dirty Tricks · Sap and Blind cost up to 50% less energy.
- Heightened Senses · You detect stealthed enemies more easily and are hit less often by spells and ranged attacks.
- Endurance · Sprint and Evasion are ready again 60% faster.
- Improved Sprint · Sprint removes all movement impairing effects when activated.
- Improved Kick · Kick also silences the target for 2 sec.
Alternative: Assassination
If you prefer playing with big critical hits, go Assassination:
- Cold Blood · Your next Backstab, Ambush or Eviscerate is a guaranteed critical hit.
- Seal Fate · Critical hits with builders award an extra combo point.
- Improved Kidney Shot · Targets stunned by Kidney Shot take 10% more damage from you.
- Improved Gouge · Gouge lasts 1.5 sec longer.
The effects come from the beta tooltips. You get your first talent point at level 10 and one per level after that.
Poisons for PvP
- Crippling Poison (from level 20) slows enemies who run away or chase you.
- Wound Poison (from level 32) reduces the healing the target receives. First choice against healers.
- Mind-numbing Poison (from level 24) increases casting time. Good against mages, warlocks and priests.
- The second weapon usually gets a damage poison such as Instant Poison.
- You need Blinding Powder for Blind. Always keep a few in your bags.
- All poisons with reagents and the quest chain: Rogue poisons.
Gear
Our PvP lists for level 30 put Stamina first, then Agility:
- With a dagger for Backstab and Ambush: PvP list with dagger. Main hand:
Silent Hunter. - With a slow weapon for Hemorrhage: PvP list with Hemorrhage. Main hand:
Ruby-Adorned Blade. - Off hand:
Bloody Brass Knuckles. - Trinkets made with Engineering:
Mechanical Dragonling,
Gnomish Net-o-Matic Projector. - Before the fight:
Elixir of Agility. - At level 60 the PvP sets from honor and ranks come into play: PvP ranks 1–14.
Tips against every class
- Warrior: Warriors are dangerous once they stick to you. Open with full control and use Evasion against their damage. Crippling Poison keeps them at a distance when you need to pool energy.
- Paladin: Paladins last a long time and heal themselves. Save Kick for their big heals and use Wound Poison. Against their shields only patience helps: wait, pool energy, then open again.
- Hunter: Hunters want distance. Stay close, only open once you are near enough, and catch them with Sprint if they get away.
- Mage: Mages slow you and freeze you in place. Vanish breaks slows, Kick interrupts Polymorph and Frostbolt. Mind-numbing Poison makes their spells slower.
- Priest: Priests heal themselves and make you flee. Interrupt big heals with Kick and use Wound Poison. Keep Blind ready for the moment you need time.
- Warlock: Warlocks fight with a pet and damage over time. Open on the warlock, not the pet, and interrupt Fear and big spells with Kick.
- Druid: Druids shapeshift and shake off slows that way. Save your stuns for the moment they want to heal, and interrupt with Kick.
- Shaman: Shamans heal and interrupt too. Interrupt their heals with Kick, use Wound Poison and don't fight next to their totems.
- Rogue: Against Rogues, whoever opens first often wins. Stay alert in stealth, use Blind against their opener and answer with your own control.

Rogues on battlegrounds
- Warsong Gulch: intercept the flag carrier and hold them with Kidney Shot until your group arrives. Crippling Poison slows them down even more.
- Arathi Basin: sneak to lightly guarded bases and take defenders out with Sap.
- Attack healers first and interrupt them with Kick. A healer taken out often decides the fight.
- Honor, ranks and all battlegrounds: PvP in WoW Forever.
